SOMA 1: Perception and Presence:
The basics of enhanced sensory perception. (See Hear Feel)
In this introduction to the series, we will begin to lay the groundwork for a steady conceptual understanding as well as practice of meditation and movement from a modern esoteric somatic lens.
We will explore through exercises 10 different categories of sense perception. Through these lenses we will have a holistic sense of the vast world of meditation, and the basics of filling in the gaps of our meditation practice.
Please imagine for a moment, you, the practitioner as a receptive medium of awareness, within which arises a combination of all the sensory happenings (all input from environment) as well as all sensations, emotions and thoughts. On an energetic and perceptual level, we want to cultivate a state of deep listening and presence. From this state of open sensory aliveness, receiving exteroception and interoception alike we abide in meditation.
Presence is a transparent interface, contacting what’s arising inside and outside our sensory environment. In our embodiment sessions, as in life, the more we cultivate this state of inner outer receptivity, the deeper our connection with self, other, and environment. As this field of presence develops, so does our capacity to hold a safe attuned container for ourselves, our clients and community.
We will begin by first differentiating various dimensions of our sensory experience. Eventually this leads to meditation as a form of synesthesia, expanding our capacity to be with the totality of our experience, and not collapsing into the relationship with any particular thinking or feeling/sensing process.
Over the course of the series we will explore how to build a practice that meets our individual physical, emotional and spiritual desires. We will explore the usefulness of different objects/foci of attention, the different somatic landscapes and their relationship to us for our own specific psychological wellbeing.
Each four hour class will involve a thematic teaching/discussion, a movement score, meditation and inquiry.
